Have you ever been on the TODAY SHOW? Would you like to know what it is like to be on the TODAY SHOW?
I always thought I might be on the outside of the TODAY SHOW, Studio 1A, looking in and waving at the hosts but never dreamed I would be on the TODAY SHOW.
The TODAY SHOW is shot live from Studio 1A in Rockefeller Plaza every day. It is located in midtown Manhattan in New York City, on 48th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. Studio 1A is where you can go and wave at the hosts and potentially even get on T.V. I know you have seen people holding signs up and waving them around trying to get the attention of the TODAY SHOW hosts and cameras.
Today’s Ultimate Cook-Off Contest
In May 2017, The TODAY SHOW had a recipe contest. I was on my computer working on a recipe post for my blog and listening to The TODAY SHOW when I heard Hoda and Kathy Lee talking about a recipe contest, Today’s Ultimate Cook-Off Contest.
They mentioned the top two winners in each category would get a trip to New York and be able to demonstrate their recipe on the TODAY SHOW. I immediately stopped what I was doing and entered. Thursday, May 11, 2017, was the last day to enter the TODAY SHOW cooking contest and I entered on this day.
The following Tuesday after I submitted my recipe, the TODAY SHOW emailed me. She wanted to set up a time to have a phone interview to narrow down the candidates. I was thrilled! My first thought was, “You have got to be kidding?!” Who Me? Can this be happening to me? I never win anything. A lady from the TODAY SHOW called me. She wanted to know how I came up with the recipe plus a little bit of information about my family and me. At the end of the call, she asked me a question. She said, “If your recipe is chosen would you be able to come to New York next Friday, May 19th. I wanted to say YES immediately, but I knew that my oldest daughter was graduating from medical school, M.D. (pediatrician), on Saturday. She had her honors awards and taking her doctor oath Friday night. I could not miss it. So, I told the TODAY SHOW that I would not be able to make it.
Just before hanging up the phone…
Just before hanging up the phone, I quickly blurted out “could you get me back to Little Rock, AR by 5:00 p.m. on Friday?” The lady said she would make a note that I could come if they could get me back to Little Rock by 5:00 p.m. I knew because of the short turnaround I probably would not get picked.
The next day, I received a phone call saying I had won and I would be demonstrating my Butterfinger Poke Cake on the TODAY SHOW. After she said I had won, and they could get me back home by 5:00 p.m., I did not hear one word she said. Thank God she emailed me the details.
The Video Below is my segment on The TODAY SHOW. If It does not load for you, you can watch it here.
I landed in New York on Thursday, May 18, 2017.
The TODAY SHOW had someone pick me up from the airport and take me to the Club Quarters hotel which was only a 4-minute walk to Studio 1A. I arrived just in time to check in the hotel and check in with security. After checking in with security at NBC studios, I headed to the TODAY SHOW for rehearsal. At the rehearsal, I was extremely excited to meet, Tiffany, who also lives Arkansas. She was competing against me with a fabulous homemade Upside Down Cupcake. Everything she made was from scratch including the ice cream.
I knew my cake mix dessert did not stand a chance. To tell you the honest truth, I did not care. Although my blog, recipesforourdailybread.com, email followers, and social media does well, I have never entered a contest. Main reason is I blog about super easy recipes. The TODAY SHOW Ultimate Cook-Off was my first cooking contest experience, and I was ecstatic to be on the TODAY SHOW. After the rehearsal, Tiffany, her mom, and I walked around and checked out the BIG CITY for at least three hours. I am just a country girl in the Big City. It was a little overwhelming but a lot of fun.
Two hours before the TODAY SHOW on Friday 19, 2017, Tiffany and I headed to the Green Room for hair and makeup. As we waited our turn for hair and makeup, we sat with Mary J. Blige’s backup singers, band, and security. Mary J. Blige was playing that morning on the show and was waiting in a room right off the Green Room. She walked just steps in front of me before and after her concert. While getting my hair done, I sat in a chair and right next to me was actress Ellie Kemper from the Office. She was extremely friendly! I was just a nobody who was being treated like a “Star.” Tears are flowing in my eyes as I write this post because I did not deserve this experience but I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity of a lifetime. It will never be forgotten.
The TODAY SHOW STAFF
TODAY SHOW staff made me feel just as important as the “Stars.” Everyone from security, hairdresser, make-up artist, and especially the producer, Kate, treated Tiffany and I extremely well. They all went out of their way to make us feel special. I had an incredible experience that will never be forgotten.
15-Minutes Before Being Live On TODAY SHOW
15-Minutes Before Being Live on TODAY SHOW, the producer escorted us to the kitchen. We quickly got our microphones on before doing a live but quick teaser segment. After the teaser, I looked up to find Sheinelle Jones entering the room. She was as bubbly and outgoing in person as she looks on T.V. I just wanted someone to pinch me. It was like I did not know why I was there. It was more than I could have ever imagined would happen to me. Again, I was overwhelmed but extremely excited and very grateful. Sheinelle Jones knew just what to say to put me at ease. She was very complimentary and great at making the guests feel special. Sheinelle was the perfect host for our cooking experience. I noticed that she did not put my cake down. She was even eating it after the segment was over. Thank you Sheinelle for being friendly, kind, outgoing, and making me feel at home. Thank you also for saying the word Butterfinger. I did not think I was supposed to say the word since it is a brand name. You surprised me, but I was thankful since it was a Butterfinger Poke Cake.
Our Cook-Off Judges
Our judges were Dylan Dreyer from the TODAY SHOW and Ellie Kemper from the Office. You can see them in the video.
Running Into Jenna Bush Hager
As we were leaving the studio, I glanced into a room and saw Jenna Bush Hager. I have always loved her, but now I am a huge fan of Jenna. Tiffany and I stopped and waved at her. Jenna said, “I just saw you, and you did great.” Was she talking about us? She was watching me on T.V. while getting her hair done. Tiffany asked Jenna if it would be O.K. to get a picture with her. I was not that brave because Jenna was not only getting her hair done but was having it colored. Jenna without any hesitation said, “Sure, come on in.” We did! Tiffany and I both had a picture made with Jenna while she was getting her hair done. I am sure Jenna would not mind me sharing her the picture of the two of us, but I know if I were getting my hair colored I would not want it shared. Therefore, I will not be adding the picture of Jenna and me to my post.
I know Jenna is from the South and southern people are friendly, but I do not think I would even be comfortable having a picture with color on my head all over the internet. Jenna was extremely friendly and better in person than I would have ever imagined. I hope she reads my post because I admire her so much. I pray God continue to bless her, her family and her career.
Please share this post on your social media and tag TODAYSHOW. Maybe, if it is shared enough, they may see it and invite me back one day. A girl can dream!
Thank you for being so supporting!
