These Spiced Waffles with Southern Fried Apples are really easy and so delicious. They are made using a box of cake mix. In the south, we just love our Fried Apples. They are served in many restaurants, such as Cracker Barrel, as a side item. They are also a wonderful treat as a topping on both ice cream and waffles. So, I make these simple spiced cake waffles using a cake mix and serve them at breakfast topped with fried apples. I also serve them as a dessert topped with vanilla ice cream and fried apples. Not only do the spice waffles smell so good, but the aroma of the apples with the cinnamon and nutmeg draws everyone to the kitchen. Use this recipe to help teach your children how to cook. I had one person cut up my apples. I had another person measure the ingredients for the apples and fry them, while someone else worked on mixing up the spiced waffle batter. You can get everyone involved by helping in the kitchen. The goal with all my postings is to give families ideas to help them spend time cooking together, eating around the table, and sharing God the Word of God together.
- 5 to 6 large apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg
- 4 TB butter – half stick
- 1/2 cup Pure Maple Syrup
Melt the butter and add the brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and syrup. Stir in the apples. Cook the apples until tender.
Spice Waffle Batter
Stir together the spice cake mix, 1 1/4 cup water, 1/3 cup vegetable oil, and 3 eggs with an electric mixer. Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of spice waffle batter to a waffle maker. Cook 4 to 5 minutes. The waffles will crisp up once removed from the waffle maker.
For Breakfast top the spiced waffles with the fried apples and maple syrup mixture.
For Dessert top the spiced waffles with vanilla ice-cream topped with the fried apples and maple syrup mixture.
Try topping this with chopped pecans and whipped cream. It kicks it up even more.
