One of the best things about Fall is Apple picking. The abundance of apples is heaven to a cook. They make the house smell amazing in every dish.
Baking with Apples
The best apple for baking is a combination of both sweet and tart apples. For this reason, I always use a combination of apples. When baking with apples, I used at least two to three different kinds. I am not an Apple expert, so I figure baking with different apples will give me the best of tart, sweet and juicy. Below are some of my favorite apples. You can use a combination of whatever apples are popular in your area.
Jonagold Apples are sweet and tangy with a yellow top and red bottom.
Gala Apples are sweet, juicy, crisp with a yellow-orange skin.
Fuji Apples are sweet and juicy, firm with a red skin.
Golden Delicious Apples are sweet. Its flesh breaks down when cooking.
Honeycrisp Apples are sweet apples with flesh that does not break down. The Honeycrisp and Golden Delicious are great in pies together.
Granny Smith Apples are pretty sweet with a firm flesh and green color.
McIntosh Apples are juicy sweet.
