This is a tasty pizza with fewer calories and carbs.

One of our favorite meals is making homemade pizza.  For years, this was a favorite family thing to do on Friday nights to help celebrate the end of the week.  After I make the pizza dough and prepare all the toppings, everyone makes an individual homemade pizza using their favorite toppings.  Making your pizzas is great family fun. So, I wanted to try to incorporate a healthier pizza into our pizza party.  My husband and I made a great tasting pizza using a large Portobello Mushroom for the base, and my children used a high fiber, low carb wheat flour tortilla.  My kids choose to use a traditional pizza sauce and my husband, and I tried ranch as the base for our pizzas.

I also tried to Lighten Up the toppings and add more vegetables.  We use a variety of toppings each time we make pizza.  They are not all healthy, but my children are being exposed to healthy choices.  My goal is to show my family that we can cut out some unhealthy foods but still prepare great tasting meals that everyone will enjoy. 

Pizza Toppings 

I normally have most of these toppings available so everyone can make their favorite pizza.  By having everything laid out, it encourages them to try some of the healthier options.  If there are other toppings that your family loves, use them.  The main idea is that everyone can make a personalized meal using ingredients that they love.  Hopefully, they will make some healthy choices.  

    • Baby spinach leaves
    • chopped purple onion
    • chopped bell pepper
    • sliced mushrooms
    • chopped tomatoes
    • dried or fresh basil
    • Italian seasoning – I love Paul Prudhomme’s Pizza/Pasta magic. Great on pizza.
    • Garlic
    • Pepperoni
    • Italian Sausage, cooked and sliced
    • ground sausage, cooked – you could use a turkey sausage
    • Bacon, cooked and crumbled
    • Mozzarella cheese – You could use reduced fat.  My kids do not like reduced fat because it does not melt as well.
