What is the best advice I ever took when raising my children?  The only thing that mattered while raising my five children.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I have been doing a lot of thinking.  Most days I feel like I am failing as a mother. I am pretty sure that I am not alone in saying this, but if there is one thing as a mother I know I have done pretty faithful, it is praying for my children.  If you ask any mom who believes in the power of prayer, “What is the best advice when it comes to raising children?”, They will all tell you to pray over your children.  Billy Grahm’s mom prayed for him to make a difference for God.  He set an example and made a huge difference, and I could add so many other moms to this list.

  • When you are changing their diapers, Pray that they will love God, and God will protect them from any accidents or illness.

  • When you are feeding your children, Pray that they will grow up to feed themselves every day with the Word of God.

  • As they are walking, Pray, “Lord, keep them pure and true to walk the narrow way.”

  • When they are choosing their friends, Pray that they will be a good example of God’s love and be a leader when it comes to doing what is right.  Pray that they will not let their friends be a negative influence in their lives.  Pray that God will protect their hearts. Pray that they will attract Godly friends as their closest friends.

  • When they are at school, Pray that they will have a desire to learn everything they can learn.

  • When they are playing sports, Pray that God would put His angels around them to protect them always.

  • When you are ironing their clothes, Pray that God will protect them and guide them in every decision they make.  Pray they will seek God’s help in making decisions.  Pray that they will wear the robe of righteousness.

  • When they are driving, Pray, Pray, Pray, that God will always be with them, always protect them and always keep them focused on the road. Yes, I have two children driving.

  • When they do things wrong, Pray that they will ask for forgiveness.

  • When they are dating, Pray that their date will love God even more than your child loves God.  Pray that they will treat the person will respect and show God’s love for them.  Pray that they will be attracted to Holiness and Purity, and they will not compromise these things. Pray that they will find the perfect mate that God wants to give them.

  • When they are getting married, Pray that both of them will love God with all their hearts and put God first in their home.  Pray that all disagreements will be handled in a way that will honor God.  Pray that they will love each other as Christ loves His church for the rest of their lives.  Pray that they will both declare that “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

  • When they are starting a family, Pray that they will still love God more than even the gift of a child.  Pray that they will pass down God’s Word to their children.  Pray that they will be an example to their children by reading their Bible and studying God’s Word with their children. Pray that their children will grow up to love God with all their hearts and want to study His Word.

  • When your children are older, and you do not think they need you anymore, Pray.  The most important thing a mom can do for her children is Pray.  Pray that they will continue to want to seek Wisdom and discernment.  Pray that they will always continue to grow closer to God.

As I quickly wrote these thoughts, I realized how thankful and blessed I am to have great children who love God.  Lord Thank you for my sweet and precious children and that you allowed me to be apart of teaching them to trust and love you.  Protect them, guide them and be with them forever. Amen!

The Mother’s Day Act was passed by both branches of Congress and approved by President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914.  The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day.  If you are a mother, I pray that God will pour His blessings on you and your household because of your faithfulness to Trust Him with the future of your children.  I pray that this Mother’s Day you will begin to pray diligently for your children and start seeing His Blessings.

As for my family and me, we have weathered a lot of storms in our lives, including Caleb’s 17 brain surgeries and Jonah and Diana’s struggles with Reactive Attachment Disorder.  Every storm has taught me to pray more.   Pray before the storms hit and pray while in the middle of a storm.  I said a prayer for everyone who reads this post.  I pray that you too will PRAY regularly for your family.

    • Janine,

Thank you so much! I was just on your site reading about your precious story about Lily’s preschool play. I really enjoyed it.

Thank you for your support! I hope you too had a great Mother’s day!
      Blessings,
      Diane Roark

  1. Such a great post! May God continue to pour back into you everything that you pour out moment by moment into your children’s lives. I pray that you will have balance in every area of your life, nothing empty, everything full in Jesus Name! Full of love, full of hope, full of peace, full of patience, patience, and more patience in Jesus Name. The longer you read my posts you will find out that I read a lot of books, and I’m always throwing out suggestions for book recommendations. Here’s another book that’s might interest you- it’s the Spiritual Warfare Guide for Every Parent: Satan You Can’t Have My Children by: Iris Delgado – foreword by Joni Lamb.

  2. Amen, Diane! My kids are 26 & 48 and I still pray for them multiple times most days. The issues just get more complicated and out of your control the older they get. I wouldn’t have made it this far without the power of prayer and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Thanks for sharing. Your family is beautiful!
