Getting to The World Food Championships Final Table
Many of you know that this past November 2017, I competed for the very first time at The World Food Championships in desserts. I am not a trained baker but merely a home cook with a love of food and food competitions. So, I decided it was time for me to try food sport. I finished third place in desserts. World Food Championships competition was one of the hardest, most stressful, but rewarding thing I have ever done. Competing with a time clock and against chefs, professional teams, and other fantastic home cooks is not as easy as you may be thinking. I needed a miracle and received one.

Although I was blessed with such an incredible finish and a Golden ticket to compete in November 2018, I did NOT get to advance to the final table.
One Person From Each Category Competes For $100,000
Categories include Barbecue, Chili, Sandwich, Burger, Chef, Dessert, Bacon, Seafood, Steak, and Chicken.
Only one person from each category competes for $100,000. But lucky for me, the final table is held in my home state of Arkansas. YEAH! Thank you World Food and Brightwater! So, I was fortunate to attend as a cheerleader. I planned to learn as much as I could soak up while cheering on the four home cooks who made it all the way to the finals. The four home cooks were some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. One of the best things about World Food Championships has been meeting so many people I now call my good friends. We all have a love of cooking and being the very best at what we do.

A World Food Champion’s Journey
Each competitor begins their World Food Championships journey in Orange Beach, Alabama. I am so blessed again, because Orange Beach, AL is like home to me. I grew up just an hour away in Mobile, Alabama. The competitors have three competitive rounds to find the best cook in each category. Forty to Fifty chefs, professional teams, and home cooks in each category cook two rounds back to back. They are given an hour for each recipe they have to turn into the certified judges. After the first two rounds, the playing field is narrowed down to the top 10 in each category. While in Orange Beach, the top 10 competitors in each category compete by making the third recipe. After the third recipe competition, one winner is chosen from each category which makes up the TOP TEN FINAL TABLE.

CONGRATULATIONS to all the TOP TEN competitors but especially the best home cooks in the World including Liz Harper Kraatz in Chili, Kim Banick in Seafood, Rebecka Evans in Bacon, Ann Reece Jones in Desserts, and a BIG SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS to the grand prize winner Lisa Gwatney for her World’s Best Steak!!!
I had an opportunity to sample 8 out of 10 of the dishes created by these World Champions. They were all fantastic!!

- Canadian and Pro Team Cook Mike Callaghan from London, ON, who won the World Recipe Championship
- Home Cook Rebecka Evans from Houston, Tex., who won the World Bacon Championship
- Home Cook Kim Banick from Salem, Ore., who won the World Seafood Championship
- Chef Craig Baker from Indianapolis, Ind., who won the World Chef Championship
- Home Cook Lisa Gwatney from Memphis, Tenn., who won the World Steak Championship
- Pro Cook Team Fred Robles from WFC World Barbeque Championship.
- Home Cook Liz Kraatz, from St. Louis, Mo., who defended her title as the World Open Chili Champion
- Home Cook Ann Jones from Browns Summit, N.C., who won the World Dessert Championship
Final Table At Brightwater Cooking School in Bentonville, Arkansas
First of all, if you are looking for a Culinary School or dream of being a chef, you need to check out Brightwater. You probably already know that Walmart’s home office is in Bentonville, Arkansas and the Walton family has a foundation. Well, if the Walmart foundation supports Brightwater, it must be a terrific school. Just the appearance alone impressed me. I caught myself dreaming of cooking at Brightwater one day. I have always wanted to attend a cooking school. Therefore, seeing Brightwater’s kitchen facilities were stunning to me. They offered everything a cook could ever want in a kitchen.
Brightwater’s goal is to provide world-class training for individuals, students, and professionals at any point on their journey into the world of food. Seriously, if you know someone who wants to go to culinary school, let them know about this World Class facility and school.
WFC Top 10 Final Table April 22, 2018
Each category turn in time was staggard by ten minutes. The turn in times are listed below. This meant the excitement was continuous every ten minutes. The anticipation of seeing each tray with the best food in the World on it was killing me. Every ten minutes for an hour and a half fabulous food came strolling out of the kitchen like it was solid gold or the queen’s jewels on silver trays. The beautiful dishes were in route to the judges’ table. I had a close-up spot near the door as the contestants’ food was displayed on a table for quick pictures before presenting them to the judges. Each tray was truly beautiful and smelled wonderful!
Each Category’s Turn In Time
3:00 p.m. – Seafood
3:10 p.m. – Dessert
3:20 p.m. – Barbecue
3:30 p.m. – Recipe (Chicken)

3:40 p.m. – Chef
3:50 p.m. – Chili
4:00 p.m. – Bacon
4:10 p.m. – Steak Dish And 2017 World Food Champion
4:20 p.m. – Burger
4:30 p.m. – Sandwich
Having ten minutes between each recipe category turn in allowed time for the contestant dish to be presented in front of a panel of five famous judges.

I love cooking and dream of having an opportunity to prepare food for the final table, but when that day comes, I hope I am not star struck with the Judging line up. Lots of media was there including Dick Clark Productions. They were videoing the entire event. I am guessing it will be on television sometime this year. Kitchen Ambush was also at WFC and streaming it live on their Facebook page. If you love food sport, you should follow Kitchen Ambush. They ambush a lot of chefs with mystery baskets full of ingredients for the chefs to create something delicious.
