Today, I am sharing my secret to making this scrumptious Flavorful Turkey Chili.  You will never know it is turkey and not beef.  I am determined to help you make this recipe turn out delicious the first time you prepare it.

My family enjoys my homemade chili, but my husband and I are trying to eat a little healthier.  I replace the ground beef and the ground sausage with Jennie-O Ground Turkey.  It ‘s hard to make a separate meal for my teens, so I was hoping they would eat this Flavorful Turkey Chili.   I was sure Casey, one of my 18-year-old sons, would say something about the chili not being “normal” but he did NOT.  He even said how much he enjoyed this Flavorful Turkey Chili.  Next time, I am doubling this recipe.   It would be great on Nachos, baked potato, hot dogs, and even a hamburger which is Casey’s favorite way of eating his chili.

The secret to making this Flavorful Turkey Chili?

 I increased all the seasonings including Cumin, Chili Powder, Garlic, Oregano, Basil, and pepper.  

My regular chili is seasoned well with ground Italian sausage, but I did not want to use sausage in this healthy chili.  Since this turkey chili was missing the flavor from the Italian sausage, it gave me an idea to increase all the seasonings.  I am glad I did.  This turkey chili is not spicy, but it has a tremendous amount of flavor.

Tips To Serve This Chili

When it gets cooler outside, chili is the perfect meal.  If you are having a party or football gathering, try having a chili bar.  There are so many ways to serve it.  Try some of these ideas:

  • Chili baked potato
  • Add it directly to a bag of corn chips or nachos
  • Over a hot dog or even hamburgers
  • Chili Quesadillas with cheese
  • In a cornbread casserole bake
  • Make some chili cheese dip
  • Serve it in a bread bowl
  • Make some chili cheese fries.
  • Chili Pie

  • 2 pounds of ground turkey browned
  • 2 – 15- ounce cans of dark kidney beans
  • 1 – 15 can of light kidney beans
  • One large chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup of salsa
  • two 15 ounce cans tomato sauce
  • 1 15 ounces can water
  • One tablespoon brown sugar
  • Three teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2-1/2 Tablespoons chili powder
  • Three teaspoons garlic powder
  • Two teaspoons oregano
  • Two teaspoons basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper


  • Brown ground turkey.
  • Add seasonings including cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  • Add onions, drained beans, salsa, tomato sauce, water, and brown sugar and simmer on low for at least an hour. I rinse my beans to remove extra salt.
  • If using your crock-pot, cook on low 4 to 6 hours. Brown the ground turkey in a skillet and then add it to the slow cooker.
  • If using your stockpot, simmer for at least an hour, longer would be better.
  • Garnish with cheddar cheese and sour cream.

    I’ve been making this recipe for a few years because we love it so much! With little kiddos, I have to hide veggies in food so I only use one pound of ground turkey and add a sweet potato. Because of the sweetness of the potato, I also omit the brown sugar. Very tasty and you don’t even notice the sweet potato! And my kids love it!

    The Turkey Chili recipe that you posted looks awesome. The pics look very appetizing. I will definitely try out the Turkey Chili recipe and have it along with baked potato or hamburger like you have suggested. The basil you added to the recipe gives it a nice flavor I guess.

    Thought I’d throw my two cents in. I’ve made this once and tonight is the second time because my husband and picky kids LOVED this so much last time. I didn’t have two dark kidney bean cans so I substituted one for a can of sweet corn, and two cans of diced tomatoes in place of the tomato sauce. I think the flavor from the sweet corn combined with everything else is what made it so much better than other chilies. So thanks for the awesome inspiration 🙂

    I am not a big fan of chili but yes I do love spicy food, they do attract me. You mentioned above that it’s not spicy But I will try it. Anyway, thank you, Diane.

    I made this chili for lunch today and it turned out wonderful! I made a few changes where I left out the salsa, basil, and oregano and my family loved it! I’ve never made a better turkey chili before. Awesome recipe!

  7. Hi Diane, Thanks for getting back to me regarding the seasonings. I made your chili recipe on this very chilly day in Chicago. Since schools were closed due to the freezing temp (-20), my 6 yo daughter was able to help me make the dish. I put it in the crockpot, and it is delicious. Thanks for sharing your recipe.       You can make this Flavorful Turkey Chili in the slow cooker. You will need to brown the ground turkey first and then add it to the slow cooker. Next, add all the rest of the ingredients and cook on low about 5 hours and on high about 3 hours.

      You do not have to simmer the Turkey Chili on low if you are putting it in the crock pot only if you are cooking it on the stove. I hope you enjoy this Turkey Chili. It is so flavorful and yummy.

  12. Great choice substituting turkey for beef. I’ve been swapping out ground and smoked turkey for beef and pork for several years now. Not only is it lower in fat but I find it to be cheaper, just the other day in a supermarket that I frequent they have recently stocked a less known brand for only $1.49 for a 16oz roll, not bad eh? I’ve always used ground turkey in my 3 bean chili and smoked turkey legs or wings for split pea, great northern, navy or my 15 bean mix soups, it’s terrific, if you’ve never tried smoked turkey you’ll be amazed at the aroma and flavor it infuses. I make all my chili and soups in a crock pot, the main reason I use ground turkey is to stay within the Kashrut guides lines of a Kosher diet, with turkey I can garnish my chili with a dollop of sour cream or cheddar cheese, without getting walloped up the side of the head by a Rabbi! A little tip before I go, if your chili comes out a little too spicy I add a teaspoon or two of peanut butter and it seems to buffer the heat of the spices, crazy huh, pretty tasty too! Well, jus’ crockpottin’ out here on the western plains, Adios n’ Hasta La Bye Bye! Bon Appetit! L.D.

      Thanks so much for the encouraging words. Thank you also for the peanut butter tip. The chili really tasted great although my kids ate lots of sour cream and shredded cheese on theirs. I increased the spices like Oregano, Italian seasoning, garlic, and more which made it really full of flavor.

  13. We too love chili here, but I usually use ground beef, red kidney beans and black beans, too. This is how my mother-in-law made it, so it is what my husband seems to enjoy. But I wonder if I substitute the turkey instead of ground beef just making sure to kick up the seasoning a bit, if he would notice. You gave me an idea and so need to try now! Thanks Diane 🙂

      I normally make my chili with ground beef and ground sausage which gives it great flavor. I found the Turkey Chili to be really good because I use 1 and 1/2 times the normal seasonings like Oregano, Italian seasonings, garlic, cumin, Chili powder, and more. I was surprised that it was not spicy.

      Your husband may not notice if my MEAT EATING teenage son Casey did not notice.
