Sandwich at Kringle Bakery in Epcot-Disney World

While at Disney in my favorite park, Epcot, we look forward to visiting Kringla’s bakery for their famous School Bread.  It is a sweet cardamom bun filled with vanilla crème custard and topped with glazed and toasted coconut.  This school bread is one of our favorite Disney Snacks.  If you are going to Disney, be sure to check out these snacks and all my Disney Restaurant Reviews.

One day while getting a fabulous piece of School Bread, I decided to try Kringla’s Ham & Apple Sandwich.  It was incredibly delicious. I had to try making one at home.

Ham & Apple Grilled Cheese with Apple Butter

Kringla Bakery uses Apple Chutney for the sauce on their Ham & Apple Sandwich.  I decided to use my slow cooker Apple Butter with Smoked Ham, a variety of apples, and Muenster cheese.

This Ham & Apple Grilled Cheese is easy to make.   This Sandwich is perfect by itself or would go fabulous any soup you are serving this fall or winter like homemade chicken noodle.  To me, nothing is better than warm buttery bread with melted ooey-gooey cheese.

Ooey-Gooey Cheese

If the Sandwich leaves a string of cheese on your chin, you know it is an excellent grilled cheese.  I love a cheesy grilled cheese on a cold day.  It is a pure pleasure to dunk it into a warm bowl of soup.  But I also enjoy a gooey grilled cheese anytime and anywhere.  This Ham & Apple Grilled Cheese is not only warm and comforting but incredibly flavorful with apple butter, apples, smoked ham, and cheese.

First Step: Building the Apple & Ham Grilled Cheese

  • Add the apple butter to one side of two pieces of bread.  See my delicious slow cooker apple butter.
  • Add a slice of Muenster cheese on top of the apple butter.
  • We layered the ham on top of the cheese.
  • Add four sliced apples on top of the ham.
  • Add a second piece of cheese on top of the apples.
  • Place the other piece of bread with the apple butter on top of the apples and cheese.
  • Butter the top outside piece of bread. For a more consistently browning, try Mayonnaise instead of butter.

Muenster Cheese

Because Muenster melts excellent, it is perfect for a grilled cheese sandwich.  Rome apples are a delicious pairing with Muenster cheese.

Try the following apple and cheese combinations.

  • Red Delicious apples are delicious with cheddar or provolone cheese.
  • Fuji with Havarti cheese.  Havarti melts perfectly on a grilled cheese sandwich.
  • Gala apples are fabulous with cheddar, but you could use swiss, or even goat cheese.
  • Honeycrisp, go well with brie, provolone or gruyere cheese.
  • Try Granny Smith or Pink Lady apples with Gorgonzola.
  • Golden Delicious apple pair with Brie or Gruyere.

Second Step: Skillet Ham & Apple Grilled Cheese

  • Add it to a medium-hot skillet. If the skillet is too hot, the Sandwich will burn. Place a lid on the skillet. Add a tablespoon of water on the side of the Sandwich. It helps melt the cheese. Make sure the Sandwich is not burning.
  • Add Mayonnaise or butter to the top of the Sandwich.
  • Cook until the bottom piece of bread is golden brown.
  • Carefully flip the Ham & Apple Grilled Cheese over and cook until the bottom side is golden brown.

Oven Version Ham & Apple Grilled Cheese

  • Bake several of these sandwiches at one time using your oven. Baking the Sandwich is a great way to brown the Sandwich evenly. When using the oven, it is better to add mayo to the top and bottom of the Sandwich.
  • Bake them in the oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until it is golden brown.

Panini Grill

You can also place this Sandwich on a panini grill after you add butter or mayo to the top and bottom of the Sandwich. Cook until golden brown.
