Happy Fall, Y’all!  It is finally here.  Apple Butter is the perfect recipe for celebrating the delicious apples we have abundantly this time of year.  You could easily make this slow cooker apple butter on your stove, but why bother when you could let your slow cooker do the work.

Ingredients Slow Cooker Apple Butter

You will need 4 pounds of apples, sugar, cinnamon, and allspice to make this fabulous apple butter.  I am going to show you step by step with pictures exactly how to make it.

  

What is Apple Butter?

First of all, as you saw from the ingredients, apple butter contains no butter.  It is apples that are cook low and slow until the apples have a smooth and buttery taste.  Apple butter is thick and kicked up with more spices than applesauce.  Apple butter cooks for a longer time than apple sauce, which allows it to caramelize.

Can you substitute apple butter for apple sauce in recipes?

You can substitute apple butter for apple sauce when replacing the oil and butter in recipes.  It adds so much flavor to recipes.  It pretty much smells and tastes like fall in a jar.

How Many Apples Do Your Need For This Slow Cooker Apple Butter Recipe?

Begin making your butter by peeling and coring 4 pounds of apples.  Four pounds of apples is about 16 apples.  Slice the apples into quarters and place the apples at the bottom of a five or 6-quart slow cooker.

Toss Everything In Your Slow Cooker

After adding your apples to the slow cooker, stir in your sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and water.

Add spices and sugar to the crockpot.

Use Your Slow Cooker To Cook Your Apple Butter

Cook the apples on low for 8 hours.  You can do this overnight.  Your apples should be very tender.

The next morning use your handheld immersion blender and thoroughly blend the apples until smooth and creamy.  If you do not have an immersion blender, allow your apples to cool and combine them in a food processor or blender. 

Why is apple butter thin?

After blending the apple butter, it will be thin or may even look watery.  Do not worry!  It will thicken up as it cools and even more once put in the refrigerator.

Ladle Hot Apple Butter Into Mason Jars

If you are not canning the apple butter, ladle the hot apple butter into heated, clean mason jars.  Place your mason jars on a baking sheet pan and in the oven to heat them—Wip the lids and around the top of the jar clean, secure lids on jars.  Next, refrigerate or give to your friends and family.

How Much Apple Butter Does This Recipe Make?

If using four pounds of apples, 16 medium apples, this recipe will make two quarts.

Use an immersion blender to make the apples smooth and creamy.

How long will apple butter last in the refrigerator?

Homemade apple butter will last three months in the refrigerator.

How long will apple butter last in the freezer?

Homemade apple butter will last up to a year in the freezer.  You have to use freezer-safe jars and leave space at the top of the mason jar.

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds apples about 16 medium apples, peeled and cored

  • 1/2 teaspoons allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoons cloves

  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  • Wash apples and then core and peel them.
  • Slice the apples into 4 equal parts.
  • Place the apples along with 2 cups water in a slow cooker.
  • Add the sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and allspice.
  • pour in the water.
  • Cook on low 6 to 8 hours.
  • Use a hand-held immersion blender to blend up the apples until smooth.
  • You can also place cooled apples in a food processor and blend until smooth if you do not have an immersion blender.
  • Ladle the butter into mason jars.
  • Do not fill all the way up to the top of the jars.
  • Makes 3 pints
